My ultimate Energy saving tip: "My must-have item in the kitchen is definitely the electric kettle. My room-mate and I always use it to heat up the water especially when making tea or coffee. It saves more energy than the old electric cooker and it takes less time to prepare my meals. If I need to heat up more than 1,5 liters of water at once, I use a cooking pot and always make sure to use the proper lid and the proper hotplate."

Profession: Student

My ultimate Energy saving tip: "Since my last journey to Africa two years ago I try to reduce my water consumption even more, especially in the bathroom. Clean potable water should not be seen as a matter of course. That’s why I use a low-flow showerhead which offers me a satisfying shower while using a minimum amount of water. Thanks to this minor investment and according to the SMERGYmeter I can save about 71 euros, 885 kilowatt hours and 265 kilograms of CO2 every year."

Our ultimate Energy saving tip: "Reduce the room temperature: With every degree less we save money and energy for heating. Thanks to the SMERGYmeter we know that we can save approximately 583 kilowatt hours, 175 kilograms of CO2 and 47 euros. In that case we don’t mind to cuddle into a nice warm sweater or under a warm blanket. We also make sure that every room has its optimal temperature and is properly ventilated."

My ultimate Energy saving tip: “Standby – goodbye. I always make sure that none of my electronic equipment is kept on standby. This might sound banal, but it makes a noticeable difference on my energy bill and lessens my ecological footprint, big-time."

Magdalene

Age: 25

Profession: Student

My ultimate Energy saving tip: "As a student I often have to study until late at night. The challenge I encountered here was to have good lighting and at the same time not having to spend a fortune on energy costs. Therefore the SMERGY action to replace conventional light bulbs with LED bulbs was a perfect fit for my needs. Thanks to this I was able to reduce my energy consumption by more than 80 percent."

My ultimate energy saving tip: "When I leave my apartment I quickly go through the checklist in my head: Do I have my keys, my mobile phone? Did I close all the windows and turn OFF the LIGHTS? Leaving the lights turned on while being away is totally unnecessary, bad for the environment and raises my energy bill ".

This small action doesn’t take much effort and is just a matter of habit. Thanks to the SMERGYmeter my list of good habits definitely got longer."

Anna

Profession: Student

My ultimate energy saving tip: "Lowering the room temperature and ventilating the room properly is by far my favorite action to reduce the amount on my energy bill.

I simply keep the temperature in my room between 19 and 20 degrees Celsius and never leave my windows constantly tiled but ventilate intensively three to four times a day for five minutes with the window sash wide open.

Saving energy has never been so easy."

My ultimate energy saving tip: "The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. In terms of diet I prefer vegetarian/vegan, regional, seasonal and organic food. Eating that way isn’t just beneficial for my physical health but also for the health of this planet. Consuming and producing seasonal and organic fruits and vegetables saves a great amount of energy, synthetic fertilizer, packaging and transportation."

My ultimate energy saving tip: "Investing in energy efficient household appliances. Because my room-mates and I, we use our fridge, dishwasher and washing machine on a daily basis, we decided together to invest some money in new energy efficient household appliances. By using them in a sustainable way we can definitely say that this decision is not just beneficial to the environment but also to our bank account."

My ultimate energy saving tip: “The best way for me to reduce my ecological footprint and save money is to use my bike or the public transports as often as possible. Especially for short distance trips to the supermarket or the university.

It keeps me healthy, saves CO2, is fun and there is no such thing as traffic jam."

Emilia

My ultimate energy saving tip: “I love to bake, especially sweet vegan treats. Thanks to the SMERGYmeter I now know how to save money and still do the things I like. Nowadays most of the ovens are very efficient and quickly get to a high temperature. This saves energy and money without doing any harm to my cakes and cookies.”

Age: 28

Profession: PhD student in Chemistry

Country: France

My ultimate Energy saving tip: “I’ve decided to buy equipment to reduce my electricity consumption at home. I bought multi-socket blocks that can be turned off to avoid the standby-mode on my electrical devices (TV, Internet Box, radio, washing machine…) when I’m asleep or outside. In order to let my fridge plugged, I bought a special one that let one socket always on. Clever invention, isn’t it?”

Age: 26

Profession: Tea-house manager

My ultimate Energy saving tip: “It may sounds silly for you but I never put water on my toothbrush before brushing my teeth! It’s a common advice given by dentists because it makes the brushing more efficient (you still have foam without water don’t worry!) and you can save an important amount of water considering you are brushing your teeth at least two times a day, 385 days per year! Think about it…”

Mélissa

Country: France

Age: 26

Profession: project manager at WWF

My ultimate Energy saving tip: “My day is punctuated by eco-friendly behaviors: they are so rooted in my daily life that I don’t pay attention anymore! The last I’ve adopted is to unplug my charger  when my phone is full. I didn’t know before SMERGY that it was still using electricity even when the phone was not plugged. What else? I only buy low energy light bulbs, I always turn off the light when I’m leaving a room and in winter I prefer wearing an extra sweater than raising my heater temperature! I love to believe that those little things are making a difference…”

Age: 25

Profession: PhD student in International Law

My last Energy saving tip: “From a salad…flowers! I got used to water my plants with the water I used to clean my salad! It’s an easy way to save water and to have beautiful flowers and potted plant

at home every day.”

Julien

Country: France

Age: 26

Profession: jurist

My last Energy saving tip: “Without giving up on modern life comfort, I always tried to keep an eye

on my energy consumption. I turn off completely my electrical devices (even the stand-by mode) at

home and at the office. For me it’s easy and natural but I often hear my colleague telling they are

letting their computer on all night… I also took an important step toward a more eco-friendly way of

living when I’ve decided I will not buy and cook meat anymore. I’m not a complete vegetarian but

I’ve decided to eat meat only when I’m invited at friends or family.”

Marine

Country: France

Age: 26

Profession: looking for a job

My last energy saving tip: “When I go to bed at night, I always lower (sometimes I’m turning it off) the heater in my room. I’ve noticed that since I’m doing that, I’m sleeping even better (with a big cover) and I’m not even feeling cold! I’m saving up energy when I’m heating less my room, and I’m sleeping like a baby!! I saw thanks to the SMERGYMETER that 1°C down can lead to save 54 kWh/year. It’s good to know I’m not doing this for nothing!! ”

Paul-Jean

Country: France

Age: 25

Profession: waiter in a restaurant

My last energy saving tip: “At home, my fridge is located very close from my window. I used to hear it very often making noises and I realized thanks to the SMERGYmeter that it was a natural process of cooling off (especially when the sun was shining on my window). I decided to move my fridge from the wall to let it “breath” and I saw that I can expect to save 12 euros/ year and 90kWh by doing this”

Romain

Country: France

Age: 25

Profession: student in geography

My last energy energy saving tip: “A friend told me she only use low energy bulbs. I looked for more

information and when I realized the difference of power consumption, I’ve decided to take the step! It’s a small investment but then it makes a huge difference on my electrical consumption.”

Laura

Country: France

Age: 26

Profession: project manager

My last energy saving tip: “Saving energy is as simple as wearing an extra sweater! We are not really feeling the difference but it makes a difference for the Planet! You can also save some electricity by a different use of your computer: no useless charging and less luminosity when you are watching a movie!”

Romain

Country: France

Age: 27

Profession: teacher in Economics

My last energy saving tip: “When I discover SMERGY I was already paying attention to my electrical consumption and my impact on the Planet but now I’m even more aware of all the things I can do. Especially on my electrical devices when they are in stand-by mode. I bought a multi-socket block last week, now I have to remember to turn it off..!”
